Water deionization has never been easier.
The DesEL system is a cost-effective process to remove ions from water or to concentrate dilute solutions. In removing ions, DesEL provides water recovery as high as 97% and requires less maintenance than conventional systems. That is why life cycle costing singles out DesEL as the system of choice.
DesEL can be configured for broad removal of total dissolved solids or preferential removal of monovalent ions such as nitrate. Both these configurations can also be used for concentrating dilute solutions.
Independent testing of the DesEL system has demonstrated its capabilities. The tests targeted 85% removal of specific compounds added separately to tap water. As shown below, the target was achieved in all cases.
| Spike | Concentration ml/g |
Removal % |
| Arsenic | 0.6 | 75-85% |
| Fluoride | 1.4 | >95% |
| Perchlorate | 0.5 | >95% |
| Nitrate | 100 | 90-95% |
| Sulphate | 150 | >90% |
| Lead | 0.05 | 80-90% |
| Copper | 1000 | 85% |
| TDS | 20,000 | 90% |

DesEL offers high water recovery
The high water recovery of the DesEL system makes it especially attractive in areas of limited water supply. For example, a wastewater volume of only 3% was obtained during the treatment of groundwater where the hardness decreased 81% and the conductivity decreased 70%.
| Input | Treated | Concentrate | ||
| Recovery | % | 97% | - | |
| Waste | % | - | 3% | |
| Conductivity | µS/cm | 324 | 97.4 | 4370 |
| Hardness | mg/L | 76 | 14 | |
| pH | 7.8 | 7.5 |
Other advantages of the DesEL system include:
- High precision of treatment
- Low energy consumption per treated volume i.e. Less than 0.5 kWh/m 3 for TDS < 1000 mg/L
- Free of chemical additives
- Lifetime of electrodes estimated at 8 to 10 years
- Effective over wide range of TDS conditions
